Stephen is Professor of Strategy at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. He has held visiting or adjunct positions at Peking and Tsinghua Universities in Beijing; ENPC, Paris; EHTP, Casablanca; Stockholm University; Melbourne Business School; Trinity College Dublin; and Warwick Business School in the UK.
His books on strategy of innovation have been translated into many languages, including Chinese, Korean, Hindi and Russian. His latest book Strategy Builder: How to Create and Communicate More Effective Strategies (Wiley, 2015), promotes learning and developing innovative strategies through drawings rather than text. It has recently been translated into Persian and Danish.
In 2009 Stephen was awarded Best MBA Teacher at Warwick Business School. He has developed and taught on executive courses for many leading organizations, including Philips, HSBC, The Financial Times, Wellington City Council, The Prudential, Air Services Australia and Callaghan Innovation. He also advises many public and private organizations and is New Zealand’s only Academic Fellow of the International Council of Management Consulting Institutes. He was recently elected Academic Fellow-at-Large of the Teaching Division of the Strategic Management Society.
Stephen has been published three times in the world’s premier management education journal (the A* Academy of Management Learning & Education), and his article ‘Unfreezing Change as Three Steps’ (with Todd Bridgman & Kenneth Brown) has recently been named by A* journal Human Relation as its best article of 2016.
