Rachel Brooking

Labour List MP and Local Government and Environmental Law Expert

Rachel Brooking is a newly-elected Labour List MP with a keen interest in the environment and climate change. At university Rachel studied ecology and law with a good dose of politics on the side. After a short stint in a large law firm in the UK, Rachel worked for the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment following the Royal Commission on Genetic Modification and investigating the concept of a Treaty of Waitangi environmental audit framework. This was followed by a long period with Anderson Lloyd in Dunedin working on a wide range of local government and resource management cases and advice. Rachel was also involved in the RMLA for many years and enjoyed being the co-convenor of the 2014 conference in Dunedin. In September 2019 Rachel was appointed to the expert panel reviewing the Resource Management System that reported back in June 2020 (the “Randerson Review”). Rachel is also well versed in governance and most recently was the chair of the University Book Shop (Otago) Ltd. and a director of Dunedin International Airport Ltd. Currently Rachel is the deputy chair on both the Environment and the Regulations Review Select Committees. She lives in Dunedin with her 3 children and husband near a beach and ice-cream truck.
