Looking beyond the “New Three’s” economic power, or the industries they represent, we must focus on their transformative potential.  Affordable solar panels on rooftops and businesses, combined with low-cost EVs and advanced batteries seamlessly connected to the grid, are revolutionising China’s energy landscape. This creates a virtuous cycle – solar power charges EVs, which then feed surplus power back to the grid.

Lessons for New Zealand and Beyond

New Zealand and other economies can leverage China’s experience:

  • Supporting Domestic Manufacturing: Fostering local production of sustainable technolgies creates jobs and reduces reliance on imports.
  • Investing in Battery Research: Advancing battery technology is going to be the greatest accelerator of change. China’s rapid development of new chemistries and solid-state batteries shows the potential for even greater breakthroughs.
  • Building Integrated Infrastructure:  Creating seamless connections between renewable energy sources, EV charging networks, and the electricity grid is key for a sustainable future.

The journey toward decarbonisation requires more than just technology, but new technologies can be a catalyst. China’s “New Three” demonstrates the transformative potential of electromobility and electrification. The road to electrifying our economies isn’t without bumps, and while we can’t ignore global geopolitical realities or the current background of trade tariffs, there are insights from China’s experience that we can benefit from. By learning from some of China’s successes and addressing potential challenges, countries like New Zealand can accelerate decarbonisation efforts and create a cleaner, more sustainable future for all.
